Social Security Disability (SSDI) Overview

Social Security Disability (SSDI) is a program run by the Social Security Administration that pays eligible individuals, individuals who qualify for benefits, a monthly benefit.  Only individuals who are eligible and who meet Social Security's definition of disability before they reach retirement age can get the monthly disability payment. The Complex SSDI Process Can Be Simplified to a 5-Step Process... 1.  Are you currently working, engaged in "Substantial Gainful Activity," and do you have sufficient work credits? Do I “Meet” a Medical Listing for Disability Benefits?

One of the first issues that the Social Security Administration (SSA) will decide is whether your impairment (based on your medical records and your application) is one that meets the requirements on SSA's listing of impairments.  SSA lists a group of illnesses and disabling conditions, along with details about their severity - if you meet all the technical requirements of that particular disability or ailment, then you "meet the listing," and are disabled as far as SSA is concerned.
